Abstract: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is often characterised by early differences in language development. However, little research has investigated whether the characteristics of atypical language acquisition persist into adulthood. The planned study intends to, for the first time, investigate how adults with and without autism learn new words via cross situational statistics and attentional cues. The proposed study will investigate how neurotypical (NT) adults and adults with autism (ASD) learn new words in 3 conditions: 1. cross situational learning without attentional cues, 2. cross situational learning with a social attentional cue, and 3. cross-situational learning with a non-social attentional cue. Participants will be asked to click on the object that they think a novel word refers to (i.e. make word-referent mappings) at 3 stages: training (96 trials), immediate test of referent selection (24 trials) and, following a 5 minute distractor task, retention test (24 trials).
