Abstract: This paper relates the results of an interview with undergraduate students and discusses the importance of understanding the concepts of grammar, language and norm from a scientific point of view in order to consolidate the critical thinking. The hypothesis which motivates this study is that those beliefs about good and bad language (endorsed by many teachers according to previous studies) is due to comprehending those concepts from a prescriptive point of view. ; A partir de uma entrevista semidirigida com estudantes do curso de Licenciatura em Letras, este artigo discute a importância da compreensão dos conceitos de gramática, língua e norma, desde uma perspectiva científica, para a consolidação do pensamento crítico dos estudantes. A hipótese que motiva esta pesquisa é a de que a crença nas concepções de certo e errado — evidenciadas em estudos sobre atitudes de professores da educação básica — advém de uma compreensão dos referidos conceitos amparada em parâmetros prescritivos.
