Abstract:
; Brandnames are part of our daily life. Sometimes to a great extent they even replace general names. But why does one say hoover instead of vacuum cleaner or Scotch for any kind of sticky tape? Which brands in Austria became synonyms for product names and why? This dissertation analyses the phenomenon. Firstly, the thesis deals with brands in general - from the legal, economic and linguistic point of view. The subsequent empirical part of the study consists of 5 group discussions, as well as analysis and interpretation. The result is that at least 248 brands became generics in Austria. There are many reasons for this: on the one hand there are primary groups responsible for the fact that we use the branducts in our language. Human beings learn branducts like vocabulary from their parents, brothers and sisters, teachers, friends or workmates. On the other hand there are semantic reasons: the simpler and easier to pronounce the brand name is the higher the chance is that the brand name replaces the general name of a product. Very often the brand name describes an innovation of a product where there didn´t exist a generic name before. Another result of this dissertation is that there are regional differences in the use of branducts as well as differences depending on the generation one belongs to. Another fact that became evident in this study is that people use branducts instead of generics sometimes unconsciously- but sometimes on purpose - even for other brands. This dissertation is a comprehensive work detailing various aspects of brands which became generics.
