Semantic memory for objects, actions, and events: A novel test of event-related conceptual semantic knowledge
In: Cogn Neuropsychol (2019)
Abstract: People possess a wealth of knowledge about how real-world events typically unfold, including the actions, people, and objects they comprise. Such event-related semantic memory subsumes action and object knowledge and is essential for multiple stages of language processing. Access to event knowledge may be impaired in neurological conditions like aphasia. However, current assessment tools are not well designed for measuring semantic memory for events. This study proposes and tests a novel measure of event-related semantic memory, one which uses photographic stimuli and procedures well-suited for neurologically-impaired populations. Normative data for the novel measure were obtained from unimpaired adults across the lifespan (n=90, 20–79 years) along with data from a sample of stroke survivors with aphasia (n=26). Measures of action- and object-related semantic memory and of language processing were also collected from the individuals with aphasia, in order to establish the convergent validity of the novel measure. Results demonstrate that performance on the event-knowledge measure correlated with both object and action semantic-memory measures, but was associated with a broader range of language-processing performance than either of the other semantic-memory measures. Furthermore, the novel event-knowledge measure successfully distinguished stroke survivors from controls. These findings suggest that the novel measure successfully captures event knowledge and can be used to detect the presence and impact of event-knowledge impairments in neuropsychological conditions, including aphasia.
