New Ventures (2): Group Placements with adults with a learning disability

Abstract: This forms the second of two reports of a new approach to speech and language professional development for speech and language in clinical placements. The project was a group placement for speech and language therapy students placed with a specialist team of speech and language therapists. working with adults with learning disability. The aims were to provide clients with an appropriate service response to their communication need, to provide the students with an opportunity to respond to a genuine referral from its onset, to prepare the students for the particular nature of the placement before starting and to give an opportunity for peer support within the student group. Though group placements are not a new idea in speech and language therapy, having been operated for many years in university-based clinics, they are not the usual pattern for service-based placements. However, the initial results of this project indicate that there may be specific additional learning opportunities in such placements, and the service and university department concerned intend to continue their development
