At University of Wales Bangor, among a number of recent MA studies by Greek students, two are described which illustrate such trends for Greek-English contrastive work applied to Greek learners of English. One focusses on grammatical structures expressing unreal conditional meanings and shows how the hypothesis testing paradigm of research can be implemented through an elicitation test to illuminate the specific negative transfers that occur and the difference (or lack of it) in the amount of transfer between intermediate and advanced learners against a background of generally increasing correctness. The other focusses on the pragmatic associations of well-known vocabulary items with everyday meanings like ‘beer’ and ‘children’ and shows how elicitation of information using Osgood’s ... : Selected papers on theoretical and applied linguistics, Vol 5 (1991): Proceedings 5th Symposium on the Description and/or Comparison of English and Greek, Thessaloniki 27-29 March 1991 ...
