Subjectification and listener power

Abstract:
; Subjectification is one major mechanism driving semantic change. It leads to utterances becoming increasingly focused on the speaker’s “subjective belief, state or attitude towards the proposition” (Traugott 1989: 31). Subjectification is considered by Traugott to be one way in which speakers can meet their desire to convey their subjective needs and opinions. One important aspect that has received little attention in current research on subjectification is if and how the listener contributes to the subjectification process. Holtgraves (2014) looked at a number of studies that tested how uncertainty terms such as possible or like are interpreted in different communicative scenarios and found that interpersonal factors not only influence how something is said, but also how it is interpreted by the listener. Like the studies reviewed by Holtgraves, this experimental study looked at how the interpretation of a selection of ambiguous words differed, depending on how powerful the listeners perceive themselves to be. The underlying hypothesis was that as an omnipresent element in communication, power would influence the interpretation of ambiguous words, causing less powerful individuals to interpret ambiguous utterances in a more subjective way than individuals who perceived themselves to be more powerful in relation to the speaker. The reasons for increasingly subjectified meanings in language, it was argued, would be found not only in the speakers’ desire to convey their subjective attitude, but also in the listeners’ wish to find out more about the speakers’ attitude towards them and the world. In order to test this hypothesis, an experiment was conducted. 62 participants took part in a short chat communication and were instructed to ask their chat partner 9 questions. The part of their chat partner had been pre-designed in order to ensure that all participants were presented with the same stimuli. The chat conversation consisted of nine rounds (questions) with three steps each. First, participants were instructed to ask their ‘partner’ one out of four versions of the same question. Secondly, they were presented with their ‘partner’s’ answer. 5 out of the total 9 answers contained ambiguous elements. Thirdly, they were presented with six statements about their ‘partner’s’ answer and had to express their level of agreement with the statements on a Likert scale (1= I don’t agree at all, 9= I totally agree). Participants were divided into two groups. Group P+ was the powerful group. Participants in this group were told that their selection of question would not be assessed. Group P- was the powerless group. They were told that their selection of question would be assessed. After the experiment, all the participants completed a follow-up questionnaire, where they had to give their interpretation of a selection of ambiguous elements. The results of the experiment showed that there was indeed a difference between participants from group P+ and those from group P-. The powerless participants more frequently chose subjective interpretations of ambiguous utterances and showed considerably lower levels of agreement with the six statements than the powerful participants, which confirms our hypothesis. However, the results did not confirm our hypothesis as clearly expected, and there are a number of methodological issues that have to be addressed, should the experiment be repeated.
