The Power of Words : contrastive Analysis of Conceptual Metaphors in American English and Peninsular Spanish Press
Abstract: This paper examines the role conceptual metaphors have in reproducing and justifying certain cognitive models-and, by extension, certain courses of action. After reviewing the sociocultural and neural aspects of conceptual metaphors, this paper will present the empirical study conducted to illustrate the relationship between linguistic metaphors and cognitive patterns that ultimately determine courses of action. The analysis consists of a comparative between the main systematic conceptual metaphors found in American English and Peninsular Spanish written press regarding the Capitol riot (January 2021) and the protests against the "Procés" sentence (October 2019). ; Aquest estudi examina quin és el paper de les metàfores conceptuals a l'hora de reproduir i justificar certs models cognitius-i, per extensió, certes línies d'acció. Després de revisar els aspectes socioculturals i neurals de les metàfores conceptuals, es presentarà l'anàlisi empíric realitzat, il·lustrant la relació entre metàfores lingüístiques i patrons cognitius que ens determinen a l'hora d'actuar. L'estudi consisteix en una comparativa entre les principals metàfores conceptuals trobades sistemàticament a la premsa escrita en Anglès Americà i Espanyol Peninsular, en relació amb l'atac al Capitoli (gener 2021) i les protestes contra la sentència del "Procés" (octubre 2019). ; Este estudio examina el papel de las metáforas conceptuales a la hora de reproducir y justificar ciertos modelos cognitivos-y, por extensión, ciertas líneas de acción. Después de revisar los aspectos socioculturales y neurales de las metáforas conceptuales, se presentará el análisis empírico realizado para ilustrar la relación entre metáforas lingüísticas y patrones cognitivos que determinan nuestras acciones. El estudio consiste en una comparativa entre las principales metáforas conceptuales encontradas sistemáticamente en la prensa escrita en Inglés Americano y Español Peninsular, acerca del ataque al Capitolio (enero 2021) y de las protestas contra la sentencia del "Procés" (octubre 2019).
