Guerreiro, Carla Alexandra do Espírito Santo.
; Based on the reading and analysis of the literary work: Olifaque- uma farsa em emigrês, by the scientist and writer João Magueijo, we intend to reflect on the experience of “Portugality” abroad, specifically in Canada. The narrative is written according to the “language” that the author heard and spoke in the Portuguese community living in this country, having lived there from 2005 to 2007. We will focus on some specific cultural and linguistic points, highlighted by the author in the construction of the characters and intrigue of the novel. In our theoretical reflection, we based ourselves in the researcher Eduardo Mayone Dias, professor, pedagogue, philologist, literary scholar and “chronicler of America”, one of the most prestigious names in the world of letters of the Portuguese dispersion in North America, who uses the term “emigrês” to define an established lingua franca that no one studies. We will base ourselves on the work: Falares emigreses-uma abordagem ao seu estudo, in which he describes and reflects on the curious and diversified linguistic world of the portuguese people abroad, dealing with special attention the case of the Portuguese community established in Canada. We will show how, through this novel, Magueijo builds a narrative whose characters reveal traces of racism, xenophobia, and sexism, called by the author himself as "farce", which leads us as readers to ask whether Gil Vicente felt the same reactions when representing his plays in 16th-century Portugal, also characterized by popular expressions typical of the Portuguese at that time. If the playwright appropriated the way it was spoken at the time, so does the scientist and writer João Magueijo, in this "portrait", made with exquisite humor, of our compatriots who live in Canada, a community that he certainly knows well, we think, for having lived there with many of the characters of this Olifaque. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
