Produtividade da derivação regressiva no português brasileiro : um estudo sobre a vogal final
Abstract: Este estudo descreve a produtividade da derivação regressiva no português brasileiro (PB) sob a ótica da vogal final. ; This study describes the productivity of back-formation in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) from the perspective of the final vowel. Questioning the apparent randomness or unpredictability of the selection of the final vowel (o, a or e) in the words formed by back-formation (e.g. abandono ‘abandonment’ < abandonar ‘to abandon’; combate ‘combat’ < combater ‘to combat’; fuga ‘escape’ < fugir ‘to escape’), this study aims to describe the linguistic factors involved in the productivity patterns of back-formation from the analysis of three samples of the lexicon: (i) dictionarized lexicon; (ii) institutionalized lexicon and (iii) potential lexicon. For this, this research is based on the notion of productivity in two areas, availability and profitability (CORBIN, 1987), and assumes, as a basis for methodological procedures, the notion of stored exemplars in the lexicon (PIERREHUMBERT, 2001). First, the availability in the dictionarized lexicon of BP was observed through the Electronic Dictionaries Aurélio and Houaiss. The collected data were then coded based on linguistic factors. Subsequently, the lexical frequency in the institutionalized lexicon (Corpus Brasileiro) and the productivity patterns in the potential lexicon (online experiment) were verified. The results of the online experiment were compared to the morphological and phonological patterns found in the dictionarized lexicon and the institutionalized lexicon. In general terms, there is convergence in the distribution of the three final vowels in the two samples. The results also show convergences for the linguistic factors verbal conjugation, number of syllables and onset of the last syllable, and divergences, in morphological complexity, tonic mid vowel and manner of articulation of the preceding context. The online experiment replicates the BP general pattern of high frequency of verbs of the first conjugation and of the final vowel a, in addition to also presenting a high incidence of the vowel o, which may reflect the tension between the predominance of feminine nouns ending in a in the general pattern of nouns in Brazilian Portuguese and the higher frequency of masculine nouns ending in o in the verbal nouns formed by back-formation. In addition to these two forces, general feminine pattern (a) and masculine pattern for deverbal (o), the final sound pattern TA/DA and TE/DE seems to have a relevant role in the selection of the final vowel.
