Imagens presidenciais nos discursos de tomada de posse nos cem anos da República Portuguesa ; Presidential images in the inaugural addresses in hundred years of the Portuguese Republic
; The present doctoral dissertation work has as an object of study the 27 presidential inaugural addresses, delivered in the course of one hundred years of the Portuguese Republic (1911-2011) and has three main objectives: (1) the analysis of presidential images; (2) the study of the presidential inaugural addresses as discourse genre, particularly, in its connection with the construction of presidential images and (3) the constitution of a corpus of presidential inaugural addresses. We started with the analysis of the enunciative organization of the speeches and the construction of the speaker, the interlocutors and the discourse objects, as enunciative modalities, so that we could proceed to the actual analysis of presidential images – of the types of images that are constructed, their discursive materiality and the local linguistic-discursive mechanisms that participate in their construction and their different configurations in the three distinct periods of the Portuguese Republic. We conclude that there are two major types of image construction: (1) the construction of the image regarding the speaker – the images that presidents build of who they are as a person and who they are as Presidents; and (2) the construction of the image regarding the other – the images that the Presidents build as leaders of Portugal, of the country and the of Portuguese people. We have shown that there is a global image of the President specific to the First Republic, to the Estado Novo and to the Democracy, influenced by the different socio-political conditions, the prevailing ideologies and the objectives of every speech. We have also concluded that there is an image of the President common to the three political periods which relates to the discourse genre and constitutes a gender parameter of the inaugural address. We have put forward the existence of an institutional ethos to account for how the institutional status and expectations in relation to the figure of the President condition and are conditioned by the construction of presidential images in the speech. We have also proposed a typology for the description of the presidential inaugural addresses, and we have made contributions to the description of this discourse genre. We have also set forth a possible constitution of the collection of the presidential inaugural addresses of the Portuguese Republic.
