Abstract: Several studies in the last decade could show that young children are more sensitive to thematic than taxonomic relations (e.g., Unger, Savic, & Sloutsky, 2020). This effect has not been found in young adults. Thus, the thematic preference effect subsides throughout childhood. Several assumptions can be made as to why and when the effect subsides. The Co-Occurence account proposes, that taxonomic relations are derived from thematic relations (Sloutsky, Yin, Yao, & Dennis, 2017) and thus, the larger the associative network the larger the probability of taxonomic relations in the lexicon - or in short: the larger and interconnected the vocabulary, the larger the probability for taxonomic sensitivity. Another factor driving lexical growth or restructuring could be the acquisition of reading. It fosters vocabulary development (Verhoeven, van Leeuwe & Vermeer, 2011) and might cause the lexicon to reorganize (Metsala & Ehri, 2013).
