Zapal Kebokoq rini en ; Kebokoq rini en ; Documentation of zapal 'folk stories' in Bunaq, a minority language of West Timor

Abstract:
This zapal tells the story of a girl who marries a Kebokoq (kind of caterpillar) who has the ability to change form into a human. The girl grew up playing with the caterpillar, while her parents worked their garden. She tricks her parents into letting her marry a stranger, who is in fact the Kebokoq in human form. Eventually, the Kebokoq eats his wife, their daughter. The parents set fire to the house in order to destroy the person-eating Kebokoq. This zapal serves to warn against marrying off one's children to strangers about whose background little is known. This zapal has several tellings. Rather than Kebokoq the antagonist is sometimes referred to as Balo Bi, a different kind of worm. See the zapal called "Balo bi en gakirik" in this corpus for a variant telling. Note that this story, as with many other zapal, is also known amongst the Tetun. This zapal accordingly includes some Tetun language. ; Bunaq "zapal" is an endangered form of fairy tale-like folk story traditionally told in the family group at night before going to sleep. With the arrival of electricity and television in Bunaq villages, the traditional night time forum for telling "zapal" has been lost. As a result, children know little or nothing of this aspect of Bunaq culture; only elderly community members and some adults know individual tales from the vast canon of "zapal" that the Bunaq once had. The "zapal" encapsulate and elucidate aspects of the Bunaq world view and their environment. The documentation of "zapal" therefores provide an unique perspective on the traditional livelihoods and beliefs of the Bunaq for researchers. ; Bunaq with occasional Indonesian/Malay ; Born in Duarato village, parents from Fatobenau village.
