Problemes et resultats d'une etude statistique surle Syntagme Nominal francais
HUG, MARC. - : Oxford University Press, 1989
Abstract: The author presents his »Thèse d’Etat« devoted to a statistical study of the French Noun Phrase He first deals with some of the problems encountered in defining the NP and analyzing it Some lexical classes, traditionally classified among adverbs, actually often function as kinds of pronouns, as beaucoup, assez, trop or dedans, dessus , etc Prepositional phrases with a zero preposition are also a problem when one defines the NP as »every term or phrase that can be substituted for a phrase of the form Determiner + Noun« A computerized syntactic analysis will be unable to resolve ambiguities without human help The data of the author's corpus show to what extent several criteria could help the computer to find a good interpretation more often in analyzing NPs In the second section, a number of results of the work are summarized A first result concerns methodological questions related to the use of statistical methods in syntax It appeared that general frequencies rarely can be extended to the whole corpus from a subcorpus of fragmentary data For example, the frequency of masculine and ferminine forms in the corpus cannot be supposed to be the same within substantives, personal pronouns, definite articles, possessive determiners etc A terminological question is discussed concerning indefinite and partitive articles More concretely, linear correlations between frequencies of personal pronouns show that pronouns of the first and second person appear alternatively in the same contexts, while pronouns of the third person singular rarely are mixed with those of the third person plural Last
