Abstract:
When listening to speech, adults often rely on context to anticipate upcoming words. Consistent with this, adult N400 responses reflect a word’s predictability given the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic constraints of the context (Kutas & Federmeier, 2011). However, we know far less about the role of context in lexical access in children or how it is reflected in their N400 responses In a prior study, we explored lexical access in a naturalistic context, in adults and 5-10-year-old children. Participants listened to a story as ERPs time-locked to the onset of every word were recorded. Each content word was coded for frequency, semantic relatedness (LSA), and cloze probability. In both children and adults, the N400 was predicted by cloze probability when controlling for frequency and semantic association. Children’s N400’s also varied with word frequency, while adults’ did not. A follow-up analysis of this dataset will further analyse the process of lexical access during spoken language processing.
