Design of Meanings:A Multiple Case-study of Meaning Making with Videos as Multimodal Texts
In: Curriculum Studies Summer Collaborative (2016)
Abstract:
This project seeks to understand how readers construct meanings from videos, which incorporate visual, linguistic and audio resources in their making. Three experienced readers were invited to watch and respond to four web-based videos, which differ in their genre, purpose, production, theme and executional techniques. Through a process of qualitative analysis, three profiles of readers emerged. While Vincent's reading tends to be a negotiated site consisting of analytical reasoning, expression of personal taste and feelings, and active effort to maintain respect for others who are implicated in the process, Alex was an intellectualizing reader whose primary concern and point of reference centered on authors and their purposes. Emmi engaged most strongly with ideas and discourses and spoke about the authors and intention evoked by the texts rather than those outside of text and before text. Across the cases, the process of meaning making is characterized by complex intellectual moves, attention to multimodal interactions, extensive intertextual connections, and heterogeneous, multidimensional responses. The study advances the discussion on what it means to read and being a reader in an intensely complex, multimodal world.
