Becoming word meaning experts: Infants’ processing of familiar words in the context of typical and atypical exemplars ...
Zettersten, Martin. - : Open Science Framework, 2022
Abstract: Abstract. How do infants become word meaning experts? This study will investigate the structure of infants’ early lexical representations by manipulating the typicality of exemplars from familiar animal categories. 14- to 18-month-old infants (planned sample: N=80; 40 female; expected race/ethnicity: 60% White, 18% Asian, 3% Hispanic, 2% Black, 17% multiple categories) will be tested on their ability to recognize typical and atypical category exemplars after hearing familiar basic-level category labels. The main question is whether infants’ word recognition extends to a narrow vs. broad range of category exemplars. The design provides 80% power to detect an effect size of d=0.32. Individual differences in word recognition will also be investigated. This study will illuminate how infants’ knowledge of word extension develops. ...
