Theoretical and corpus-based investigation of the relation between sensorimotor processes and linguistic structure

Abstract:
Diese Arbeit bietet eine verkörperte Perspektive auf die Nahtstelle zwischen sensomotorischer Kognition und sprachlicher Struktur. Der Ansatz ist von Knott (2012) inspiriert, der vorschlägt, dass die zugrunge liegende Struktur des Satzes "die Frau greift eine Tasse" als sequentielle Repräsentation bestimmter sensomotorischer Prozesse verstanden werden kann, welche in einer vorgegeben Reihenfolge das Greifen einer Tasse ausmachen. Die Arbeit erweitert dabei bestehende empirische Erforschungen dieses Ansatzes, in dem sie eine neue multimodale Studie durchführt die sich an Korpus-basierten Methoden der Erforschung von Regelmäßigkeiten der menschlichen Sprache orientiert. In dem sie das tut, wird die Grundlage für detailierte Nachforschungen zu den sensomotorischen Grundlagen sprachlicher Struktur gelegt. Zu diesem Zweck trägt diese Arbeit folgende Forschritte bei, nämlich i) eine Diskussion der konzeptuellen Grundlagen und des theoretischen Rahmens auf die sie aufbaut, ii) eine eigenständige empirische Methode und Datenverarbeitung, welche einen neuen Korpus ausmachen (Reinboth et al., 2020), iii) eine Software um Visualiserungen der erhobenen Daten zu erstellen, plus iv) Vorschläge für zuküunftige Nachforschungen zu und Anwendungen des beschriebenen Ansatzes, aufbauend auf diesen Visualiserungen, und v) eine Diskussion grundsätzlicher soziopolitischer Themen in die diese Arbeit eingebettet ist. Das bedeutet, dass diese Arbeit Aspekte der künstlichen Intelligenz, Linguistik, Philosophie, Psychologie under Wissenschafts und Technikforschung zu einer transdisziplinären Perspektive zum Thema einer sensomotorischen Grundlage der sprachlichen Strukture verbindet. ; This thesis offers an embodied perspective on the interface between sensorimotor cognition and linguistic structure. It is inspired by Knott (2012), who suggests that the underlying structure of a sentence like \the woman grabbed a cup" can be thought of as being based in a sequential representation of certain sensorimotor processes that make up a default order of actions involved in reaching for a cup. This thesis extends previous empirical work on the subject by conducting a new multimodal data collection that draws on corpus-based analyses of regularities in human language. In doing so, it lays the foundation for a detailed exploration of specific predictions about the sensorimotor basis of linguistic structure. To this end, the thesis makes a variety of contributions spanning i) a discussion of its conceptual basis and the theoretical frameworks on which it is based, ii) an original experimental design and data analysis pipeline, as well as a novel corpus (Reinboth, Gross, Bishop, & Krenn, 2020), iii) a software tool to visualise the data recorded for this study, plus iv) suggestions for future research and applications based on visualisations generated for this thesis, and v) a discussion of fundamental sociopolitical issues in which this work is embedded. That means the thesis draws together aspects of artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and science and technology studies into a transdisciplinary perspective on the sensorimotor basis of linguistic structure.
