Abstract:
Aquest estudi se centra en els coneixements, els usos i les creences lingüístics dels progenitors anglòfons transnacionals residents a l’àmbit metropolità de Barcelona. Es combina la descripció dels coneixements i usos lingüístics amb l’exploració de com es formen aquestes pràctiques com a resultat de la trajectòria sociolingüística de cada individu. Dades quantitatives de cent seixanta-quatre progenitors revelen que la població manifesta uns coneixements significativament més baixos del català que del castellà, amb un coneixement major del català a mesura que el temps d’estada augmenta. Pel que fa als usos lingüístics, els progenitors revelen un ús considerable d’anglès i castellà amb els amics, els companys de feina, la parella i els fills, que contrasta amb un menor ús declarat del català. En les vint-i-sis entrevistes semiestructurades, els progenitors que havien adquirit o reportat l’ús del català van indicar que els havien motivat factors socials principalment. Pocs van expressar un rebuig obert al català i van argumentar que trobaven que la llengua tenia poca utilitat per a ells. Precisament aquests individus manifestaven tenir pocs lligams amb catalanoparlants. Es conclou que les trajectòries sociolingüístiques i les interaccions que hi estableixen els progenitors tenen un paper important en la formació de les seves creences i, per extensió, en els seus coneixements i usos lingüístics.Paraules clau: famílies transnacionals, usos lingüístics, transmissió lingüística, trajectòria lingüística. ; This study focusses on the language abilities, uses and beliefs of transnational anglophone parents resident in the metropolitan region of Barcelona. It combines a description of language abilities and use with an exploration of how these practices are shaped by each individual’s sociolinguistic trajectory. Quantitative data from 164 parents reveals that this population declares significantly lower ability in Catalan than in Spanish, with greater knowledge of Catalan as length of residence increases. In terms of language use, the parents report considerable use of English and Spanish with their friends, colleagues, partners and children, in contrast with much lower declared use of Catalan. In the 26 semi-structured interviews, parents who had acquired and reported use of Catalan indicated that they had been motivated by mainly social factors. Few expressed a direct rejection of Catalan and those who did stated that they did so because they didn’t find it sufficiently useful. Those few individuals declared scant links with Catalan speakers. The study concludes that sociolinguistic trajectories and the interactions therein established by parents play an important role in the shaping of their language beliefs and, by extension, their language abilities and uses.Keywords: transnational families, language uses, language transmission, linguistic trajectory.
