魏晉「言意之辨」新論 ; A New Theory of Discussion between Meaning of Words in Wei-Jin

Abstract:
魏晉時期《老子》、《莊子》、《周易》合稱三玄，是清談的主要內容，依湯用彤先生所言：「玄學系統之建立，有賴於言意之辨」，玄學的時代任務在調和儒道間的衝突，理想人格為：體「無」的聖人，魏晉時期的學者們使用了言意之辨的新方法透過三玄的注解建立一種儒道間的平衡。論及魏晉言意之辨，一般多以為「言盡意」、「言不盡意」、與「得意忘言」，前兩項根本與方法論無關，僅「得意忘言」可以稱為方法，然而在湯用彤先生的《魏晉玄學論稿》中，遲了發現玄學方法有分類標準不明的問題以外，還有將「得意忘言」與「寄言出意」混用的習慣，這使得「言意之辨」的論述體系殘缺不全。 其實「言盡意」與「言不盡意」的本質上是「論」，是一思想家對語言表意的功能所持的立場，雖然「言意之辨」歷來被視為魏晉的新眼光新方法，但卻並非魏晉所獨有的議題，「三玄」既是先秦已有的作品，我們便不能不忽視背後作者表意的方式，然在「寄言出意」與「得意忘言」的關係之中，我們可以觀測到的是一件作品中不同角色對待作品的不同方式，也就是「創作」與「解讀」。其實「言意之辨」的論述體系帶了三種不同的視角給我們，分別是「言意觀」、「表意方式」與「創作方法」，本篇論文的目的便在以此為標準，重新建構言意之辨的論述體系，而魏晉注家之所以能在「三玄」的文本中發明會通儒道的言外之意，皆是因為使用了「得意忘言」作為注經的方法，本文將一一展開說明。 ; During the Wei and Jin dynasties, Laozi, Zhuangzi and Zhouyi are collectively called Three Metaphysics, which are the main contents of Pure Conversation. According to Tang Yong-tong, "The establishment of the Metaphysical System depends on the discussion between word and meaning". Scholars of the Wei and Jin dynasties used the new method of discussion between word and meaning to establish a balance between Confucianism and Taoism through the three metaphysics commentary. In the discussion between word and meaning in the Wei and Jin dynasties, "words exhaust meanings," "meanings beyond words," and "catching meaning while forgetting words", the first two are actually not related to methodology, but "catching meaning while Forgetting Words" can be regarded as a method. However, in Tang Yong-tong's "Essay on Wei-Jin Metaphysics", it is late to find that metaphysical methods have unclear classification standards and even confuse "Catching meaning while Forgetting Words" with "Images set off meaning". In fact, "words exhaust meanings" and "discussion between word and meaning" are essentially "theory", which is a thinker's position on the function of linguistic representation. Although "discussion between word and meaning" has been regarded as a new vision and method in the Wei-Jin period, it is not an issue unique to the Wei-Jin period; "Three Metaphysics" was already in existence in the pre-Qin period. Therefore, the author's way of expression behind the scenes cannot be ignored. In the relationship between "images set off meaning" and "catching meaning while forgetting words", the different ways in which different characters in a work treat the work can be observed, that is, "creating" and "interpreting". In fact, the discourse system of Discussion between word and meaning brings us three different perspectives: the view of word and meaning, the way of ideation, and the method of creation. The purpose of this thesis is to reconstruct the discursive system of discernment of meaning and speech by this standard. The reason why the Wei and Jin philosophers were able to identify the meaning beyond the words of Confucianism and Taoism in the Three Metaphysics text was the use of "Catching meaning while forgetting Words" as a method of commentary, and this thesis illustrates each of these points.
