The Iambic Trochaic Law ...
Wagner, Michael. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: In sequences of otherwise equal tones and syllables, listeners tend to hear iambs if ever other tone/syllable is longer, and trochees if every other tone/syllable is louder. This is called the iambic-trochaic law. There have also been claims that pitch has similar effects to intensity with respect to the ITL. However, prior evidence is potentially confounded, since task(often: did you hear iamb/trochee?) does not allow to infer whether low or high pitch/frequency was perceived as prominent. Here, we test how consistent prominence is perceived on high/low syllable/tone, and also whether there is greater variability in the effect of pitch because pitch in speech can be either interpreted as the reflex of a pitch accent or of a boundary tone. We also test how similar tone vs. syllable perception is. Finally, we will look at how intensity and duration affect the interpretation of pitch. ...
