It is possible to study the former by drawing a ‘vocabulary rate plot’ and analysing the shape of the line that appears using some simple concepts from ‘time series analysis’. From examination of a small sample of coursebooks for learners of English it emerges that one will find considerable differences between courses in the average number of new items per unit, and a great deal of variation between one unit and another within any course. Some of this latter variation seems to be just irregular, some due to the occurrence of ‘cycles’ - more or less uniform sequences of units bounded by a unit with little or no new vocabulary. There is also often a generally downward trend in the rate of introduction of new items through a course.
