Abstract: “‘Strike me with a sunflower’ Oscar Wilde”, one of a set of trade cards inspired by Oscar Wilde’s journey to America in 1882. It features a well-dressed male figure (Wilde?) surrounded by a sunflower in a vase, in a bag (both the flower and bag bearing dollar signs), a calla lily, and a dog with a sunflower petal mane. Such trade cards were influenced by the Aesthetic Movement, Patience [a satirical opera on the Aesthetic Movement of the 1870s and '80s in England, by Arthur Sullivan and W. S. Gilbert], and Wilde’s Sarony imagery. Printed by E.B. Duval of Philadelphia, the images on these trade cards are stereotypical depictions of various ethnic groups (some with stereotypical dialect) as well as symbols of the Aesthetic Movement. Copyright 1882. ...
