Effects of White Noise on Attention in the Classroom for Children with ADHD
; The purpose of this research is to investigate whether white noise has immediate and sustaining effects on classroom attentive behaviors for school-aged children with ADHD. Two fifth-grade students participated in this research. A single-subject design was implemented to record the classroom attentive behavior over time: at baseline, during white-noise intervention, and at follow-up. Continuous white noise was provided by white-noise machine (LectroFan) during intervention; the classroom sustained and selective attention behaviors were evaluated within the natural context and ongoing routine in the initial 20 minutes of class via self-designed “Attention Performance Observation Chart”. A questionnaire used as a supplement was completed by participants’ classroom teacher in order to establish social validity. Data was presented through visual analysis to explore the effects white noise on classroom attentive behavior. Results indicated that sustained and selective attention behaviors in classroom immediately improved after listening white noise. However, there were no sustained effects of white noise intervention on classroom attentive behaviors in students with ADHD. Classroom teachers are positive towards the administration of white noise on classroom attention task performance in students with ADHD. Results of this study suggests that white noise intervention can be used as a complementary method to improve classroom attentive behaviors.
