Abstract:
"Mr. Barlow went out as a lad of 17, and living alone with the native has picked up their language magnificently, speaking to-day like one of themselves, He is the acknowledged authority on the language by all the missions, and he has done much valuable translation work, including the Gospel of Mark, some Old Testament tales, and many Hymns. He has in addition the supervision of the whole work at Kenia. Including teaching and Evangelistic work." Portrait of Mr Arthur Ruffelle Barlow (1888-1965), linguist and translator, nephew of David Clement Ruffelle Scott, joined his uncle in Kikuyu aged seventeen. ❧ "This Lecture was prepared by Dr J.W. Arthur in October 1911 on his voyage to Mombasa. The set of slides is the gift to the Kikuyu Mission of the Young Peoples Meeting at the Burgh Hall, Hillhead, of which he was for many years a member." A green folder marked 'Kikuyu' and containing lecture notes and relevant photographs to accompany lantern slides. ...
