Abstract:
Does gender, race, or age of political candidates matter to voters? A large literature seeks the answers to why certain candidates are elected, while others are not. Results tend to show that voters do not have strong preferences for the sociodemographic characteristics of the candiates, even though results are somewhat mixed. We propose that voters have lexicographic preferences meaning that party-ideological affiliation of the candidate is of first order, while socio-demographic preferences gain in importance when two candidates share party affiliation---such as in many primaries and nonpartisan elections. We integrate lexicographic preferences into standard, formal models of voters' utility functions, which usually only considers ideological and valence attributes of the candidates. Furthermore, we show how the conjoint methodology---which is often used for testing theories of candidate choice---can be used to test for lexicographic preferences.
