Abstract: This project takes a longitudinal approach to investigate how social dynamics within VR change over time. In particular, we examine how long-term social VR-use influences people’s perceptions of their interactions and relationships with others. We observed groups of students interact with one another in social VR across eight sessions. We investigate how environmental context (outdoors vs indoors), visibility (volume of space visible; panoptic isovist vs constrained isovist), and freedom to translate in virtual space (mobility; active vs passive) influence people’s use of language in networked VR over time (audio-recording) and their perceptions of groups (open-ended questions). ...
