Videoarte: mito, género, posmodernidad ; Videoart: myth, gender and postmodernity
Gas Barrachina, Silvia. - : Universitat Jaume I, 2022
In: TDX (Tesis Doctorals en Xarxa) (2022)
; The history of video art has been constructed from a reductionist perspective, based on the figure of creative geniuses, displacing the critical analysis of the productions made by women. Likewise, video art, as a field lacking in deep study, presents problems in its significance as it has been crossed by museum institutions and technological evolution. The solution currently adopted responds to a line of thought that justifies the impossibility of categorizing video art practice due to its hybrid and mutable nature. This work constitutes a possible answer to this problem, based on a critical analysis of the videographic medium. Videoart: myth, gender and postmodernity aims to elaborate a theoretical body on video art, from its beginnings, in the mid-sixties, until the nineties, which has allowed a deepening in the relationships established between video art practices and the postmodern context where they are developed. In this way, a dialectical and semiotic approach to the works is made, permitting the images to be endowed with new meanings. The object to be examined has been approached mainly from a gender perspective. In the systematic procedure, a combination of research methods from the fields of Art and Social Sciences were used, with their respective techniques for the delimitation and analysis of the set of elements. The singularities of each of the applied methods offer the advantage of outlining and making visible new knowledge that allows the totality of the studied phenomenon to be understood. The results obtained propitiate the configuration of a theoretical body focused on videographic production. The systematization and conceptualization of languages, narratives and aesthetic elements of each period, as well as the comparative analysis between the practices created by men and women, constitute a theoretical basis built in the academic field, which overlooks subjectivities ascribed to particular interests or circumstances of artistic institutions and personalities linked to art criticism, who have set themselves up as builders of the history of video art. ; Programa de Doctorat en Estudis Interdisciplinaris de Gènere
