Abstract: International audience ; Our paper first gives a general account of pseudo-clefts in contemporary French, and then focuses on the description of structures using the il y a verb (there is) (ce qu’il y a c’est [.] / what there is is [.]). The research is based on a 7 million word corpus (with a balanced proportion of written and spoken data), and provides information on the form and frequency of such structures. We propose that 4 different types should be distinguished. The first two types, which are the most frequent, are described as pseudo-clefts, on the basis of their syntactic, semantic and discursive characteristics. The two remaining types are only loosely related to pseudo-clefs and should be analyzed at the macrosyntactic or “discursive” level.
