Learning English as a Second Language: A Comparison between Spanish and Adopted Chinese Teenagers

Abstract:
With globalization, the flow of immigration and adoptions has increased over the years. In Spain, and particularly in Catalonia, a lot of children with different nationalities learn Spanish, Catalan, and English apart from their native language(s). In the cases of native Spanish and adopted Chinese, Spanish and Catalan tend to be their mother tongue because children have a high exposure to these languages in school and preschool from a very early age. In the case of English, however, children go through a second language acquisition learning process, which implies learning English when they have already acquired their first language. This paper compares the difficulties of learning English as a second language between teenagers born in Spain and teenagers adopted from China in a high school environment. Most research has shown difficulties when learning English as a Second Language focusing on Spanish students (Jiménez & O’shanahan, 2010) or Chinese learners of English in China (Gao, Zheng, Nichols, Zhang, Shang & Liu, 2019). This paper contributes with a comparison between these two groups in a different perspective. In order to identify the possible differences in English learning written surveys and activities will be used in active and passive English skills, together with the reasons for such obstacles when learning English which are likely to vary among both groups. ; Amb la globalització, el flux d’immigració i adopcions han augmentat durant els darrers anys. A Espanya, particularment, a Catalunya, molts nens amb nacionalitats diferents aprenen el castellà, el català i l’anglès a part de la seva llengua materna. En el cas de nadius espanyols i xinesos adoptats, el castellà i el català acostumen a ser la seva llengua materna perquè els nens tenen una elevada exposició a aquestes llengües a l’escola i a l’educació infantil des de molt petits. No obstant això, en el cas de l’anglès, els nens passen per un procés d’aprenentatge d’adquisició d’un segon idioma que implica aprendre anglès quan ja han adquirit i establert el seu primer idioma. Aquest treball compara les dificultats per aprendre anglès com a segona llengua entre adolescents nascuts a Espanya i adolescents adoptats des de la Xina en un entorn d’institut. La majoria de les investigacions han mostrat dificultats a l’hora d’aprendre anglès com a segon idioma centrat en estudiants espanyols (Jiménez & O’shanahan, 2010) o aprenents d’anglès nascuts a la Xina (Gao, Zheng, Nichols, Zhang, Shang i Liu, 2019). Aquest treball contribueix amb una comparació entre aquests dos grups en una perspectiva diferent. Per tal d’identificar les possibles diferències en l’aprenentatge de l’anglès s’utilitzaran enquestes i activitats escrites en habilitats d’anglès actives i passives, juntament amb els motius d’aquests obstacles a l’hora d’aprendre anglès que probablement variïn entre els dos grups. ; Con la globalización, el flujo de inmigración y adopciones han aumentado durante los últimos años. En España, particularmente, en Cataluña, muchos niños con nacionalidades diferentes aprenden el castellano, el catalán y el inglés aparte de su lengua materna. En el caso de nativos españoles y chinos adoptados, el castellano y el catalán suelen ser su lengua materna ya que los niños tienen una elevada exposición a estas lenguas en la escuela y en la educación infantil desde muy pequeños. Sin embargo, en el caso del inglés, los niños pasan por un proceso de aprendizaje de adquisición de un segundo idioma que implica aprender inglés cuando ya han adquirido y establecido su primer idioma. Este trabajo compara las dificultades para aprender inglés como segunda lengua entre adolescentes nacidos en España y adolescentes adoptados en China en un entorno de instituto. La mayoría de las investigaciones han mostrado dificultades a la hora de aprender inglés como segundo idioma centrado en estudiantes españoles (Jiménez & O'shanahan, 2010) o aprendices de inglés nacidos en China (Gao, Zheng, Nichols, Zhang, Shang y Liu, 2019). Este trabajo contribuye con una comparación entre estos dos grupos en una perspectiva diferente. Con el fin de identificar las posibles diferencias en el aprendizaje del inglés se utilizarán encuestas y actividades escritas en habilidades de inglés activas y pasivas, junto con los motivos de estos obstáculos a la hora de aprender inglés que probablemente varíen entre los dos grupos.
