Abstract:
International audience ; Arrival (Denis Villeneuve, 2016) explores the link between language and cognition, espousing the linguistic theory known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, according to which the language one speaks shapes one’s cognition and worldview. The film focuses on a linguist who, after learning how to speak the language of extra-terrestrial visitors who recently landed on Earth, finds out that she can think and feel like the aliens do—she thus undergoes a revolutionary transformation, as the alien language enables the protagonist to transcend humanity’s view of time, thus gaining the capacity to foresee the future. This article suggests that by staging such a perceptual and cognitive revolution, the film explores the possibility of cinematic identification: by identifying with the protagonist, can the viewers also experience a worldview that is so radically other? I posit that the film celebrates the ethical dimension of identification while encouraging viewers to reflect upon the limits of cinematic identification and, in the process, the limits of the human capacity to identify with an Other. ; Premier Contact (Arrival), film de Denis Villeneuve sorti en 2016, explore les liens entre langage et cognition, et s’engage en faveur de l’hypothèse linguistique dite de Sapir-Whorf, selon laquelle le langage maîtrisé par un individu façonne sa cognition et son rapport au monde. Le film met en scène une linguiste qui, en apprenant la langue d’une race extra-terrestre venue sur Terre, se découvre capable de penser à la manière des créatures ; or, il s’agit d’une découverte révolutionnaire, puisque maîtriser cet exo-langage permet à l’héroïne de transcender la vision du temps qui façonne l’expérience humaine, et d’ainsi prévoir le futur. Cet article suggère qu’en mettant en scène une telle révolution cognitive et perceptuelle, le film interroge les potentialités de l’identification cinématographique : en s’identifiant à l’héroïne, les spectateurs peuvent-ils faire l’expérience d’un rapport au monde si radicalement autre ? Nous verrons que le film célèbre le caractère éthique de l’identification cinématographique, tout en incitant les spectateurs à s’interroger sur les limites du dispositif cinématographique et, à travers lui, sur les limites de la capacité humaine à véritablement s’identifier à autrui.
