Dabei ist die Frage zu stellen, wie Deutschlernende ein Kompositum interpretieren und es verstehen. Dass das menschliche Gehirn dabei eine Rolle spielt, ist selbst-verständlich, aber welche kognitiven und mentalen Prozesse liegen der Verarbei-tung und Interpretation eines einem Deutschlernenden unbekannten Kompositums zugrunde? Mit dieser Fragestellung beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit. Da Menschen mittels Sprache Bezug auf die Welt nehmen, wird davon ausgegangen, dass ein Deutschlernender bei der Erschließung eines ihm unbekannten S+S-Kompositums auch sein Weltwissen zu Hilfe nimmt. Wenn er noch andere Sprachen kennt, ist zu vermuten, dass diese ebenfalls eine Rolle bei der Verarbeitung spielen. Auch der Muttersprache des Lernenden wird in diesem Kontext eine Bedeutung zugesprochen (cross-linguistic influence). Um diese Fragen experimentell zu beantworten und überdies zu untersuchen, wie ein Deutschlernender bei der Erschließung eines S+S-Kompositums vorgeht und welche mentalen Prozesse dabei zugrunde liegen, wurden drei Kompositakategorien ausgewählt: Komposita mit demselben Kopfnomen; Komposita, die mehrere Interpretationen erlauben; exo-zentrische Komposita. Bei der letzten Kategorie ist davon auszugehen, dass wörtliche Analysen und Interpretationen vorgenommen werden können. Die Untersuchung erfolgte durch die psycholinguistische Methode des Lauten Denkens, wodurch die Verbalisierungen der Probanden aufgenommen wurden. Die Analyse der Daten zeigt, dass sich ein Deutschlernender auf seine Muttersprache, sein Welt-wissen, sein sprachliches Wissen über das Deutsche und andere Sprachen sowie seine eigenen Erfahrungen stützt, um eine sinnvolle Interpretation für das Kompositum zu finden. Die Ergebnisse des Experiments zeigen, dass das Weltwissen sowie semantische Analogien die Verarbeitung und Interpretation des Kompositums beeinflussen. Ein Deutschlernender geht verschiedenen Strategien nach, um die Bedeutung des Kompositums zu erschließen. Es wurde außerdem gezeigt, dass die Muttersprache und andere dem Lernenden bekannte Sprachen auch eine Rolle dabei spielen. Aufgrund der Ergebnisse ist hervorzuheben, dass sowohl das semantische als auch das episodische Gedächtnis eine Rolle in der Verarbeitung spielen. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung können für den Unterricht „Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ von Bedeutung sein. ; Composition is a productive process of word formation in German, by which words are compounded and become a word with a meaning. This poses the question of how learners of German interpret a compound and understand it. It is self-evident that the human brain plays a role in this process, but which cognitive and mental processes underlie the processing and interpretation of an unknown compound word to a learner of German? This is what this paper is concerned with. Since we refer to the world by means of language, it is assumed that a learner of German also uses his commonsense knowledge (knowledge of the world) to help him compre-hend an S+S (N+N) compound that is unknown to him. If a learner of German knows other languages, then it can be assumed that these also play a role in pro-cessing, and the learner's native language is also assumed to play a role (cross-lin-guistic influence). To answer these questions experimentally and to investigate how a learner of German proceeds to understand the meaning of a S+S (N+N) compound and which mental processes underlie it, three categories of compounds were se-lected: compounds with the same head noun; compounds that allow multiple inter-pretations; exocentric compounds. By exocentric compounds, it can be assumed that literal analyses and interpretations can be performed. The study was carried out using the psycholinguistic method of thinking aloud, through which the verbaliza-tions of the subjects were recorded. The analysis of the data show that a German learner relies on his native language, commonsense knowledge, linguistic knowledge of German and other languages, and his own experiences to find a mean-ingful interpretation for the compound. This leads to the conclusion that com-monsense knowledge, semantic analogies influence the processing and interpreta-tion of the compound noun. A learner of German pursues different strategies to infer the meaning of the compound noun. It was also shown that the native language and other languages known to the learner also play a role in this. Through the re-sults, it can be emphasized that both semantic and episodic memory play a role in processing. The results of the study can be important for teaching "German as a foreign language".
