Abstract:
Vocabulary learning is an essential process for L1 as well as L2 development (Barcroft, 2011; Lervag & Aukrust, 2010). In contexts where the input is limited (such as in foreign language learning environments), vocabulary becomes a central part of L2 learning. Furthermore, vocabulary learning can be influenced by different aspects, such as length and frequency of the word being learned, long-term memory, speech perception, phonological awareness (PA), phonological short-term memory (PSTM), working memory (WM) (Hu, 2003; Milton, 2003; Morra & Camba, 2009; Nicolay & Poncelet, 2013; Mota & Souza, 2016). Among these factors, one that does not have a consensus in the area regarding its influence on L2 vocabulary learning is PA (Gottardo et al., 2008; Hu, 2003; Kalia et al., 2018; Speciale et al., 2004).
