Russian genitive plurals are impostors
In: http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/Clubs/nels/jbailyn/knigFFF.pdf (2008)
Abstract: Our primary focus in this paper is on the distribution of allomorphs for the Russian genitive plural. The Russian genitive plural has been a topic of interest to morphological theory because various authors have claimed that its derivation involves some or all of the following grammatical principles: (1) a. Inflectional paradigms aspire to “avoid homophony”. The Russian nominative singular and genitive plural endings reflect a transderivational attempt to minimize homophony across in-flectional endings. b. Inflectional paradigms require transderivational reference: one cannot compute the Russian genitive plural without knowing what the nominative singular ending is. c. Markedness-based neutralization may not hold: the genitive plural ending in Russian, unlike other oblique plurals, shows distinct gender inflection. The goal of this paper is to show that, counter to appearances, the Russian genitive plural does not instan-tiate any of the principles in (1). In regards to (1-a), it would be opportunistic and in fact false to claim that homophony-avoidance plays a role in Russian inflection across the nominative & genitive cases. Feminine nouns show identical endings for nominative plural and genitive singular:1 (2) Nom. Sg Nom.Pl Gen.Sg Gen.Pl
