The languages studied for the purpose of this dissertation are Hindi and Bangla. Both Hindi and Bangla are free word order languages with Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) as the canonical word order. However, other word orders like O-S-V, S-V-O, O-V-S, V-S-O, and V-O-S are also available. The different word orders in Hindi and Bangla are manifestations of different information-structural properties, and can also differ in their prosodic properties. Therefore, the studies presented in this dissertation aim to experimentally explore the different prosodic encoding of focus with respect to different word orders (SOV and OSV) in Hindi and Bangla. Further, the dissertation also looks deeper into different focus types (new information focus, corrective focus and selective focus) to study the differences in prosodic encoding of focus types and their interaction with word order and structural position of the focused ...
