The Effects of Learners' Motivation, Teacher Immediacy Behaviors, and Class Interactions on Their Willingness to Communicate
; Formal education in Taiwan is nowadays very much test-oriented. English examinations usually target reading and writing, rather than listening and speaking. Moreover, oral proficiency is hardly practiced in class because teachers rarely give any opportunities for students to practice. Therefore, students tend to seek out extra English courses from language institutes. As students are still typically unwilling to talk in class, different factors influence their willingness to communicate (WTC). To explore the problem, this study investigates students’ perceptions on motivation, teachers’ immediacy behavior, and class interaction toward WTC in a language school. In total, 266 participants from a language school in southern Taiwan answered 53 questionnaire survey items, covering willingness to communicate (WTC), motivation, teachers’ immediacy behaviors, and class interaction, with 18 of them interviewed afterwards. We use the independent T-test to analyze differences between students and learners who are employed and use one-way ANOVA to examine learners with high-, mid-, and low-level English proficiency. Three important findings are as follows: (1) learners’ extrinsic motivation positively correlates with their willingness to communicate and teachers’ immediacy behaviors and small group discussion positively influence their WTC; (2) greater interaction with teachers inspires learners’ WTC; (3) learners of high-level English proficiency are intrinsically motivated and prefer talking freely, teachers’ encouragement, and individual practice. Those of mid-level English proficiency have more extrinsic motivation; mid- and low-level proficiency learners are willing to talk if teachers have a positive attitude and tolerate their mistakes; all of the learners prefer small group discussions instead of individual practice. Lastly, this study offers pedagogical implications and limitations.
