Between 1543 and 1559 appeared, for example, the first printing of the works of Boscán and Garcilaso, the Cancionero de romances by the Flemish printer Martín Nucio, the Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes, and La Diana by Jorge de Montemayor. These publications initiated literary practices of material significance in Early Modern Spain: Italianized poetry and the omnipresent romance, the picaresque and the pastoral novel. These very different works have in common a fertilization of the Castilian background by a foreign contribution: Catalan and Italian, Flemish, Portuguese, Latin or Greek. They are the fruits of a multilingual culture favoured by the mobility of the court and the political and religious instability. It is therefore not surprising that they coincide with a flourishing of translation that can be measured not only in the large number of translations (from Greek, Latin, Italian and even French) but also in their quality. In many cases, these were first translations of works of the highest rank in the literary canon, both ancient and modern. All of them had the ambition of achieving a version that does not impoverish the original and yet that seems to be written directly in Spanish, with a determined will of appropriation and naturalization. The translators, who act on their own initiative, argue that by giving access to authors of incomparable value in the language shared by everybody, they serve their homeland and honor their nation. There are personal ties or circumstantial coincidences between the translators, their printers and dedicatees. The group formed by these translations can be seen as a stylistic and rhetorical macro-experiment that prepares and accompanies the emergence of genres whose germination occurs then: notably, the epic and the novel. ; Las décadas centrales del siglo XVI tuvieron en el proceso histórico de la literatura en lengua española un papel fundacional. Entre 1543 y 1559, se sitúan, por ejemplo, la primera impresión de las Obras de Boscán y algunas de Garcilaso de la Vega, el Cancionero de romances del impresor flamenco Martín Nucio, la Vida del Lazarillo de Tormes, la Diana de Jorge de Montemayor. Con estas publicaciones inician su curso nada menos que la poesía italianizante y el omnipresente romance, la picaresca y la novela pastoril. Las cuatro obras tienen en común, en su concepción como textos y su producción como libros, una fecundación del fondo castellano por un aporte extranjero: catalán e italiano, flamenco, portugués, latino o griego. Son frutos de una cultura plurilingüe alentada por la movilidad de la corte y la inestabilidad política y religiosa. Por ello, no sorprende que coincidan con un florecimiento de la traducción que puede medirse no solo en el número de traducciones (del griego, del latín, del italiano e incluso del francés) sino también en su calidad. Se trata en varios casos de primeras versiones castellanas de obras de altísimo rango en el canon literario, tanto antiguas como modernas. Muchas ostentan la ambición de lograr un texto que no empobrezca al original pero que parezca escrito directamente en castellano, con una voluntad decidida de apropiación y naturalización. Estos traductores, que actúan generalmente por iniciativa propia e imprimen el resultado de sus esfuerzos, sostienen que, al trasladar al romance obras e incomparable valor, sirven a su patria y honran a su nación. El conjunto de las traducciones (cuyo inventario se hallará en apéndice) es coherente y significativo también porque se dan vínculos personales o coincidencias circunstanciales entre los traductores de estos años, sus impresores y dedicatarios. Puede verse dicho conjunto como macro-experimento estilístico y retórico que prepara y acompaña el surgir de géneros cuya germinación se produce entonces: señaladamente, la épica y la novela.
