Abstract: This dissertation is a study of the discourse-pragmatic characteristics of Korean evidential endings, including suffixes and sentence enders, which indicate the source of the information in the knowledge claim being made by an utterance. My primary aims are to examine how information claims are expressed, shared, and actively negotiated in Korean discourse through evidentials expressing direct, indirect, and inferential evidence, and to investigate the knowledge and use of such evidential forms by non-native speakers of Korean. Using discourse pragmatics approaches, including interlanguage pragmatics for the non-native speaker data, I employ mixed methods to collect and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data to analyze the actual production of Korean evidentials by native (L1) and non-native (L2) Korean speakers. By focusing specifically on evidential pragmatics, this study aims to clarify the various roles that evidential expressions can undertake in Korean discourse. ❧ The results showed that, ...
