; The present study was idealized and developed in the context of Portuguese as a Non- Native Language teaching during the school year of 2018/2019 in Krakow, Poland. During this period, we found ourselves in a privileged position to stage a comparison between adult Polish speakers in Krakow and adult Polish speakers in Lisbon. We seized the opportunity and oriented the study in the direction of a theme that revealed itself problematic for the learners, understanding figurative language. Therefore, within the theoretical background of Second Language Acquisition and Cognitive Linguistics we decided to study the process of acquisition/learning of the metaphorical competence — the hability of understanding and producing metaphorical expressions ubiquitously present in everyday life (cf. Danesi, 1993; Batoréo, 2015) — of the mentioned speakers. We chose 14 metaphorical idiomatic expressions based on the verb ‘dar’ and in parts of the human body and we designed a linguistic comprehension test that was solved by speakers both in Krakow and in Lisbon. In addition, we elaborated an inquiry with the purpose of describing the social and linguistic context in which the speakers were living but also to identify other potential factors, apart from the linguistic and cultural milieu, that have influence over the metaphorical competence. The groups’ test results did not reveal any significant differences between the level of metaphorical competence displayed by the speakers in Krakow and the speakers in Lisbon, but an analysis performed on the individual speaker level, supported also by the information obtained in the social inquiries, revealed that the quantity/quality of input, the motivation and affection felt towards the language, the years of study dedicated and the time spent in an environment of linguistic and cultural immersion may also play an important role.
