INTERSECTING PERSPECTIVES ON ATELIER 45 AND THE JAMAICAN ART MOVEMENT ; REGARDS CROISES SUR L'ATELIER 45 ET LE JAMAICAN ART MOVEMENT
Lefrançois, Frédéric
In: Rendre Hommage à l'Atelier 45 ; https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-01680415 ; Rendre Hommage à l'Atelier 45, Jean Marie-Louise, Oct 2016, Fort de France, Martinique (2016)
Abstract:
National audience ; The emergence of the Jamaican Art Movement thanks to the engagement of Edna Manley and innovative young artists can be paralleled with the birth of the Atelier 45 (Workshop 45) in Martinique, FWI, where Raymond Honorien, Marcel Mystille and Germain Tiquant tackled genuine Caribbean subjects in their paintings. Both islands were colonies before and during the Second World War. However, the political and cultural context in which their artistic consciousness arose bears witness to the vitality of Caribbean art which has always been challenged by questions of aesthetic canons. The present essay endeavours to show the legacy of this contribution in contemporary Caribbean artistic production.
