Abstract:
The past-participle production in written French was studied in 6th and 8th graders with varying reading levels. Participants wrote simple sentences read aloud by the experimenter. All sentences followed the (has + past participle) syntactic structure. The lexical (lemma) frequency of the verb and the regularity of the past participle inflection were orthogonally manipulated. A quantitative analysis of the erroneous inflections showed variations in performances regarding the reading level, the lexical frequency, and the past participle regularity. Students with low or medium reading level made more errors on the regular inflections (/e/) when the verb was frequent than when it was rare. A reverse effect was noted on the irregular inflections (/i/). Similar data were reported in our previous studies in 2nd and 3rd grades. The morphological learning is discussed within the framework of a connectionist approach. ; La production des participes passés en français à l’écrit a été étudiée chez des collégiens scolarisés en 6ème et 4ème dont les niveaux en lecture différaient. Les participants ont écrit des phrases simples sous dictée. Toutes les phrases étaient du type « sujet + verbe (a + participe passé) + objet ». La fréquence lexicale des verbes (lemmes) et la régularité des terminaisons des participes passés ont été manipulées orthogonalement. Une analyse quantitative des terminaisons erronées a fait apparaître des variations de performances selon le niveau en lecture, la fréquence des verbes et la régularité des terminaisons des participes passés. Les collégiens dont le niveau en lecture était faible ou moyen commettaient davantage d’erreurs sur les participes passés réguliers en /e/ lorsque les verbes étaient également de fréquence élevée tandis que sur les participes passés irréguliers en /i/, un effet inverse était observé. Nos précédentes études conduites auprès d'enfants de 2ème et 3ème années de l’école élémentaire avaient mis en évidence des résultats similaires. L’apprentissage de la morphologie est discuté dans le cadre d’une approche connexionniste.
