Dies geschieht anhand einer Untersuchung der Charakterzüge von Ethnizität und durch ein Beleuchten der Regionalisierung verschiedener Arten ethnischen Humors, sowie dessen Darstellung in ausgewählten Unterhaltungsformaten. So findet man in unterschiedlichen Comedy-Genres eine kontrastreiche Darstellung jener Ungleichbehandlung, mit der Minderheiten in der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft häufig konfrontiert werden. Die genauere Erkundung dieser Thematik basiert auf drei Genres, deren Auswahl darauf beruht, dass sie einen Querschnitt solch humoristischer Gattungen wie des absurden Humors, der Parodie, politischer Satire, Slapsticks und schockierenden beziehungsweise auf Ekelgefühle anspielenden Humors bilden. Die Analyse behandelt ethnischen Humor in visueller und verbaler Form. Zu diesem Zweck wird die seit langem laufende Comedy-Sendung Saturday Night Live, in der vor allem politischer Humor in satirischer Form dargeboten wird, einer Studie unterzogen. Hier interessiert die Art und Weise, in der die afro-amerikanische Minderheit, politische Persönlichkeiten und Ereignisse aus der amerikanischen Geschichte einbezogen werden. Das zweite untersuchte Fernsehformat ist die Zeichentrick-Sitcom Family Guy und die darin vorgefundene Verarbeitung populärer Konzepte, wie jene des Stereotyps der Kernfamilie ("nuclear family"), sowie traditioneller Familienwerte. Die analysierte Episode beinhaltet tabuisierte Themen wie Homosexualität und religiöse Belange. Der analytische Teil schließt mit einer Abhandlung über There’s Something About Mary (Verrückt nach Mary), einem Film der Farrelly-Brüder, in dem Humor sowohl über Slapstick, als auch mittels auf Ekel anspielende Elemente und der Darstellung von Personen mit Behinderungen funktioniert. Der amerikanische ethnische Humor betont Mängel der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft und des amerikanischen Traums. Aufgrund seiner starken meinungsäußernden Natur und der steten Verarbeitung tabuisierter Themen anhand von Übertreibung und Stereotypisierung ist diese Art von Humor stark mit Konzepten wie Demokratie und Redefreiheit verbunden. Neben der Hauptaufgabe des Humors, nämlich der zu unterhalten, funktioniert seine ethnisch-basierte Spielart als ein Marker für notwendige Veränderungen innerhalb der amerikanischen Gesellschaft. ; This thesis demonstrates how ethnicity has influenced humor in the United States. The characteristics of ethnicity are investigated, as well as where different types of American ethnic humor can be found and how it is portrayed in various formats. The arguments within contrast the real-life inequality of certain minority groups in American society, with comical portrayals of these issues in different comedy genres. The in-depth exploration on this theme is based on three different genres that were selected because they represent a cross-section of ethnic humor, providing examples of comedic devices such as absurd humor, parody, political satire, slapstick and gross-out comedy among others. The analysis concentrates on both the visual and verbal ethnic humor contained in certain comedy works. For this purpose, a study is conducted on the long-running sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Because of the show’s tendency to depict political events as subject matter, the analysis is based on the use of political humor in the form of satire. Political humor is investigated, specifically on how it incorporates the African-American minority, political figures and certain events from American history. The second analyzed piece is the recent controversial animated sitcom, Family Guy and its parody of popularized concepts, such as the stereotype of the nuclear family and traditional family values. In the analyzed episode the creators of the animated show incorporated taboo topics in the show’s content, such as homosexuality and religious dimensions. Lastly, the analysis concentrates on the Farrelly brother’s movie There’s Something About Mary with its slapstick and gross-out humor in relation to the body and bodily functions, as well as the portrayal of the handicapped minority. The American ethnic humor emphasizes possible “imperfections” of the American society and the notion of the American Dream. American humor has strong influences from democracy and freedom of speech. It is used to voice public opinion and to address taboo topics through exaggeration and stereotyping. Although its main purpose is to entertain, it also has an informative role for Americans and is therefore a significant indicator of the changes that are needed in the American society.
