Die Studie analysiert Kinderbilder und Gruppengespräche zu zwei ausgewählten, johanneischen Ich-bin-Worten mit Hilfe einer auf Basis der dokumentarischen Methode geführten Auswertung. Metaphorisches Verstehen stellt sich dabei als ein durch komplexe, un-bewusste sowie emotionale Vorgänge begleiteter und gesteuerter Prozess dar, der in hohem Maße kontextabhängig ist. Dabei wird deutlich, dass viele Grundschulkinder bereits über ein Gespür für metaphorische Sprache verfügen. Die vorliegende Studie kann auf der Ebene der bildlichen Gestaltung fünf Typen metaphorischen Verständnisses herausarbeiten. Darüber hinaus liefern die Kinder nicht nur aus Sicht kindertheologischer Bestrebungen fruchtbringende Deutungsmuster der beiden Ich-bin-Worte, sondern es sind wichtige, religionspädagogische Beobachtungen festzuhalten. Die Schüler lassen sich u.a. von Ansätzen sogenannter hoher Christologie des Johannesevangeliums und einer engen Verwobenheit von Theologie und Christologie anregen und gehen mit ihr – entgegen bisheriger Bedenken – in höchst kreativ-gestalterischem Maße um. Die Arbeit tritt damit in die Fußstapfen kindertheologischer Forschung, die einen konsequenten Perspektivenwechsel in der Erforschung kindlicher Deutungsmuster und Ausdrucksweisen verlangt. Sie zeigt auf, wie ein möglicher forschungsmethodischer Weg aussehen kann und möchte eine Sensibilität für kindliche, insbesondere auch non-verbale Ausdrucksweisen sichtbar machen. ; Elementary school children like metaphors. – This is a key finding of present religious education that, in an empirical and qualitative manner, investigates elementary school students’ capabilities for metaphorical understanding. This work analyzes children’s drawings and group discussions on the “I am the door” and the “I am the light” saying from the Gospel of John. Based on the documentary method of R. Bohnsack, the qualitative analysis reveals that children’s metaphorical understanding is multi-faceted and can be stimulating for theological thinking. Five types of understanding at the level of visual composition were identified. Metaphorical understanding arises here as a complex process, which is accompanied and controlled by unconscious and emotional events, and which is highly dependent on context. It becomes obvious that many elementary school children already have an understanding of metaphorical language. In addition, children present interpretations of the two “I am” sayings that can be rewarding to the research of children’s theology, and this study makes important observations for religious educational science. This work thus follows the approach of children’s theological research which calls for a consistent change of perspective in children’s interpretation patterns and their modes of expression. It demonstrates how a possible research methodology could look like and aims to create a sensitivity for children’s (especially non-verbal) expressions.
