Abstract: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are defined as any potentially traumatic events that may occur within the first 18 years of life (Felitti et al., 1998; Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). The effects of ACEs “get under the skin” through the route of toxic stress (Shokoff et al., 2012). A toxic stress experience is one in which a child is exposed to strong, frequent, or prolonged bouts of stress (Shonkoff et al., 2012). Children living with toxic stress, especially younger children, may have alterations to their brain structure and function as a result of living with an overabundant release of stress hormones, such as corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), cortisol, norepinephrine, and adrenalin, throughout the body (Shonkoff et al., 2012; Berns et al., 2017).
