Problèmes linguistiques et interprétatifs, 46, pp.15-34 (2021) Abstract: International audience ; By their very nature, ancient sources do not provide an easy tool to study the socio-linguistic aspects of late antique multilingualism. Though, the detailed minutes of the council of Chalcedon and the preceding synods give us access to practical acts of linguistic misunderstanding between the dominant Greek language used by most of the bishops and the minority use of Latin or Syriac languages by non-Greek speakers. This paper shows that rather than leading to fundamental dissent, as shown by the resolution of the Ibas case, it made the roman delegation dependent of the imperial officials. ; De par leur nature, les sources anciennes ne fournissent pas un matériau adéquat pour une étude du multilinguisme à la fin de l' Antiquité. Les minutes très détaillées du concile de Chalcédoine et des synodes précédents nous permettent toutefois d'accéder à des situations d'incompréhension linguistique concrètes entre le grec majoritairement utilisé par la plupart des évêques et le latin ou le syriaque, minoritaires, utilisés par ceux qui ne sont pas locuteurs du grec. Cet article essaie de démontrer que plutôt que d' engendrer une incompréhension de fond, comme le montre la résolution de l'affaire d'Ibas, l'incompréhension linguistique rend la délégation romaine dépendante des fonctionnaires impériaux.
