	Abstract: International audience ; The XIIIth century Prose Tristan inherits from both the early Tristan poems and, its pattern and rival, the Prose Lancelot. Copied so many times, it inspired many other European romances, and the proves of its success over several centuries are abundant.This Arthurian literature’s pivot contains more than 200 proper names against so many anonymous. Our aim is to deal with properties and functions of person-names and place-names, which are essential in a romance.What is an Arthurian proper name ? According to linguistics, it’s a grammatical and semantic monster ; as for historians, it’s an hybrid born from both ancient Celtics names and the French onomastic system which is undergoing a change in the XIIIth century ; whereas for ISIDORE’s etymologies, names are the key of persons and places.To identify a character, the quest of the name generates ritual dialogues, hazardous enquiries, non-recognition and recognition scenes. The romance sets off incognito and fame, in an Arthurian world which aims at compiling great names.Nonetheless, proper name classifies its referent: firstly, in situation, by the rarely innocent choice of the anthroponym between address terms and designatives. By its form, it also classifies in space, time and society (especially as it incorporates a character in a lineage) ; finally, the name, given or not, assigns persons and places where they belong, within a saturated romance.Above all, the power of the proper name gives it its full significance : the mere description of the character or place to follow the action, can become an active power which alters the story. Hence we can perform some glosses about the names of three figures of the Other (Giants, Fools, King Marc) and about the trite Castel Marin : they set out the great names of the romance — Palamède, Lancelot et Tristan. ; Le Tristan en prose, roman du XIIIème siècle, hérite à la fois des Tristan en vers du XIIème siècle, et du Lancelot en prose, son modèle et concurrent. Longtemps recopié, il inspira d’autres œuvres en Europe, et les indices de son succès sur plusieurs siècles abondent.Ce pivot de l’histoire littéraire arthurienne présente plus de 200 noms propres face à la foule des anonymes. Notre propos est de dégager les propriétés et le fonctionnement des anthroponymes et toponymes, données romanesques fondamentales.Qu’est-ce que le nom propre arthurien ? Selon la linguistique, un monstre grammatical et sémantique ; selon les historiens, un hybride issu de fossiles celtiques et du système onomastique en mutation au XIIIème siècle ; selon les étymologies isidoriennes, la clef des êtres et des lieux. Pour identifier la personne, la recherche du nom génère dialogues ritualisés, investigations hasardeuses, scènes de méconnaissance, de reconnaissance. Le roman porte à leur apogée incognito et renommée, données fondamentales d’un monde arthurien voué à la compilation des grands noms.Par ailleurs, le nom propre classe son référent : en situation, d’abord, par le choix rarement innocent de l’anthroponyme, parmi les termes d’adresse et les désignatifs ; par sa forme, il classe aussi dans l’espace, le temps et la société (en particulier, il fédère les lignages) ; enfin, le nom, qu’il soit prodigué ou retenu, range le porteur à sa juste place dans un espace romanesque saturé.Surtout, le pouvoir du nom propre lui donne sa pleine signification : la simple faculté de décrire personnage ou lieu, d’accompagner l’action, peut se muer en puissance active propre à infléchir le cours du récit. Dès lors, nous pouvons proposer quelques « gloses aventureuses » : par l’examen du nom, les figures de l’Autre (géants, fous, roi Marc) ou le banal Castel Marin entrent en résonance avec les grands noms du roman : Palamède, Lancelot et Tristan.
