Abstract:
; This article seeks to provide a systematic review of references to the Occitan form ièrla (a phonetically interesting derivation of the Latin word INSULA and which is used to refer to alluvial plains or lands located near water), as well as that of other derivatives of the Latin word INSULA, with similar toponymic uses in the Occitan-language domain, above all in the eastern part of the Gascon Pyrenees - especially in the Val d'Aran and the Comenge. The study also considers the phonetic transformations that account for the unusual physiognomy of this Occitan word, above all in relation to the small local articulatory variations that are recorded in the Val d'Aran and the nearby villages of the département of Haute-Garonne.
