Using the dual-route model of reading to assess and design intervention programs for two boys with developmental surface dyslexia
Law, C
;
Cupples, L
. - : Taylor and Francis, 2006
Abstract:
The Dual Route Model of reading was used to identify the specific difficulties experienced by two participants in their oral reading. Both participants demonstrated a specific difficulty with irregular word reading compared to non-word reading; a pattern observed in surface dyslexia. Further assessment revealed that both participants had difficulty at the input stage of the lexical route, namely in the development of an orthographic lexicon. Having identified that the orthographic lexicon was the area of weakness within the model, a two-phase intervention program was devised. The first phase of intervention targeted the accuracy and speed of letter processing in words and the second phase attempted to improve decoding of irregular words. The changes in reading were measured using pre- and post- assessment data and by comparing the results to a control group. The results of the intervention showed an improved performance in the oral reading of trained words and untrained words used in the intervention. In addition, both of the boys showed an improved performance of single word reading as measured by standardised tests. However, only one of the boys was able to improve his oral reading performance to a level comparable to his age. ; 1 page(s)
