Word perception on non-native linguistic features and contrasts ...
Li, Ye. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: Human beings are adept at generalizing linguistic patterns from their surrounding environments. For instance, infants as early as 6-8 month old are equipped of perceiving all sounds, while they experience perceptual narrowing to constrain the perception specific to the linguistic features of their native languages by 8-12-month old (Japanese infants no longer perceive the “r”-”l” contrast due to the absence of “r” in the Japanese linguistic inventory) (Kuhl et al., 2006). Previous literature suggests mixed results on perceiving non-native linguistic information: some show learners are fossilized in early life to perceive the auditory information absent in their native language inventory, while others suggest such capacity may be plastic until adulthood (Qi et al., 2019; Wang et al., 2020). To better address the ability of perceiving non-native linguistic information and its plasticity, the study intends to address two questions among adult population: 1) Can non-tonal speaking adults perceive the presence of ...
