Using Testing to Improve the Quality of a Linguistic Resource

Abstract:
We will report on how testing has been used to improve the quality of the linguistic resource SALDO. The concept testing refers here to standard software development methods that are used to improve quality and specify behaviour. SALDO is a lexical resource for Swedish containing both semantic and morphological information. The morphological part of SALDO has been defined in the tool Functional Morphology, and this tool has now been extended to include a framework for testing. 1 SALDO SAL (Lönngren, 1992; Lönngren, 1998) is a semantic lexicon for Swedish developed by Lennart Lönngren, which has in the last few years been augmented with a computational morphology, and is now referred to as SALDO (Borin et al., 2008a; Borin et al., 2008b; website, 2008). The computational morphology is defined with a word-andparadigm description (Hockett, 1954), with a paradigm system of around 800 paradigms and approximately 67k lemmas that are computed into 754k word forms. SALDO’s morphological description consists of two parts: a dictionary and an inflection engine. The dictionary consists of a list of words annotated with their paradigm membership, and the inflection engine computes words with their paradigm annotation into inflection tables. As an example, here is how the word ’anka’ (Eng. ’duck’) is defined in the SALDO dictionary: nn_1u_flicka "anka " {id("anka.nn.1")}; We have the citation form "anka", the mnemonic paradigm identifier nn_1u_flicka, and the definition of the entry’s lemma identifier: {id("anka.nn.1")}. The inflection engine, with its corresponding dictionary, has been defined in the tool Functional Morphology (Forsberg and Ranta, 2004; Forsberg, 2007), and the testing facility in this tool has been developed in conjunction to the work on SALDO. 2
